A man who fatally stabbed a British tourist in Albury, New South Wales, has been declared mentally unfit to stand trial. The accused, David Summers-Smith, pleaded not guilty to murder due to mental impairment.
On July 8, 2024, Royce Mallett was fatally stabbed in the chest by Summers-Smith. The court found that Summers-Smith committed the murder but lacked criminal responsibility due to his diagnosed schizophrenia and symptoms of psychosis.
Psychiatric assessments revealed Summers-Smith had a history of schizophrenia and psychotic symptoms, worsened by the use of methamphetamine and cannabis. He was receiving court-ordered community treatment at the time of the offense but had been self-medicating.
