Two men sustained injuries following a shooting incident at an Atlanta warming center on January 15, 2026. The alleged assailant, Antonio Wooten, 37, reportedly became enraged with individuals and a staff member inside the shelter located at 400 Merritts Avenue. Subsequently, Wooten produced a firearm and fired shots, hitting two patrons.
Authorities confirmed that responding officers discharged their weapons to neutralize the threat posed by Wooten. While Wooten was unharmed by police gunfire, he sustained a broken arm during a fall. The two victims, one shot multiple times and the other twice, were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital and are anticipated to make complete recoveries.
An investigation is ongoing to determine how Wooten was able to possess a weapon within the shelter, which had posted no-weapons signs and metal detectors. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist local police. Other shelter occupants have been relocated.
