Atheist Society Calls for Anti-Superstition Law in Andhra Pradesh

As of November 16th, 2025, the Atheist Society of India is calling on the Andhra Pradesh government to enact an Anti-Superstition Law to address the growing issue of black magic, witchcraft, and other harmful practices in the state.
According to J. Ravi, the national coordinator of the Atheist Society, several other states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Assam have already implemented similar laws to curb superstition and prevent inhumane practices. Ravi alleges that many black magic practitioners have been exploiting vulnerable people by instilling fear and anxiety, claiming that their supposed enemies are trying to destroy them physically and financially.
Vizianagaram District general secretary Bankuru Joginaidu has urged the police department to identify and punish these black magic practitioners in accordance with the existing laws. Joginaidu has also requested the government to introduce specific legislation to tackle this pressing issue.
The Atheist Society leaders have also discussed their concerns about the government celebrating the festivals of the late godman Sathya Sai Baba with state honors, as they believe this would contradict the Indian Constitution.
