Jail Employees Arrested for Smuggling Phones, Drugs

In Assam's Sribhumi district, four jail employees, including two assistant jailers and two warders, have been apprehended. They are accused of allowing mobile phones and narcotic substances into the Sribhumi prison. This action stems from an extensive probe initiated after a surprise search on February 2. During this raid, officials discovered 29 mobile phones, along with SIM cards and chargers, concealed within various prison sections.

The investigation was prompted by intelligence indicating that certain inmates maintained regular contact with individuals outside the facility. Authorities suspect these inmates were coordinating activities from within the correctional center. Evidence gathered during the probe reportedly involved examining call records and tracking communication patterns, ultimately leading to the arrests.

This incident occurs amid heightened scrutiny of security measures in correctional facilities across Assam. A similar operation previously took place at Dibrugarh Central Jail, where electronic devices were recovered. Officials are currently conducting further interrogations and strengthening security protocols to prevent future breaches.
