Asiatic Society Polls Delayed by Court Order
24 Apr
Summary
- Bombay High Court upheld order deferring Asiatic Society elections.
- A committee appointed for daily affairs and voter list revision.
- Court found no patent illegality in Charity Commissioner's decision.

The Bombay High Court has confirmed a Charity Commissioner's decision to defer the scheduled elections for the managing committee of Mumbai's esteemed Asiatic Society. The court ruled on Thursday that there were no grounds to challenge the March 13 order, which appointed a committee to oversee the society's day-to-day operations.
Furthermore, the Commissioner's directive for a sub-committee to compile a revised voter list within two months, followed by elections within a month, has been upheld. This move came after irregularities, such as the addition of 1467 new names to the final voter list, prompted the Charity Commissioner's inquiry.
The High Court dismissed two petitions that sought to proceed with the elections as originally planned on March 14. Justice Farhan Dubash stated that the petitions did not demonstrate patent illegality or arbitrariness warranting court intervention, recognizing the Commissioner's action as a correct measure for effective management.
