Arsenic Sweets: Family Poisons Woman, Kills Three
4 Feb
Summary
- Three people died from arsenic-laced sweets in Madhya Pradesh.
- Forensic tests confirmed arsenic levels thousands of times above safe limits.
- The poisoning was allegedly a revenge plot by the woman's in-laws.

In Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara district, a chilling case of arsenic poisoning has resulted in the deaths of three individuals: a woman named Khushboo Kathuria, her 72-year-old grandfather, and a security guard, Dashru Yaduvanshi. The guard first consumed the poisoned sweets on January 9 and later died. Subsequently, Khushboo and her grandfather also fell ill after consuming the same sweets and succumbed to the poisoning.
Forensic Science Laboratory tests on the sweets confirmed that arsenic levels were thousands of times higher than permissible limits. Police suspect Khushboo's in-laws orchestrated the poisoning as an act of revenge. They allegedly mixed arsenic into sweets and placed them near her father's shop after Khushboo had accused them of harassment following her marriage in January 2024.
Arsenic poisoning occurs from consuming high levels of arsenic, which is a naturally occurring element. Inorganic arsenic compounds are highly toxic and can cause immediate symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea, followed by severe complications including cancer, liver disease, and heart disease. Long-term exposure can lead to skin changes, warts, and potentially fatal conditions.
