A 92-year-old retired Indian Army Captain, who served in the 1962, 1965, and 1971 wars, is now fighting for justice after allegedly losing his 25-bigha agricultural land in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, to a fraudulent land scam. Captain Chunni Lal Thakur, originally from Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, claims his land in the Indira Gandhi Canal command area was fraudulently registered and transferred to another individual using forged documents without his knowledge. The alleged fraud occurred between June 16 and June 26, with the real owner never present.
Captain Chunni Lal, a Pong Dam oustee whose ancestral land was acquired for the dam's construction, was allotted this irrigated agricultural land in Jaisalmer as part of a rehabilitation scheme. He cultivated it through local farmers for years. The fraud came to light when his cultivator informed him of the sale. After repeated attempts to register a complaint were allegedly unsuccessful, the retired officer met the Jaisalmer Superintendent of Police, who directed the City Kotwali Police Station to register a case.
An FIR was registered on Saturday under various fraud-related sections, initiating an investigation. Captain Chunni Lal alleges that unidentified individuals used forged identity documents and impersonated him to execute the sale. His son questioned the registration process, highlighting the lack of fingerprint or photograph verification. The case raises concerns about verification procedures and the protection of property rights for ex-servicemen and displaced families. The Additional Superintendent of Police confirmed the FIR and ongoing investigation.
