A former army havildar, Upputholla Mallesh, has been arrested for stealing 12 military-grade weapons from the Madras Regiment armoury in Bolarum on the night of August 30. Mallesh, who was dismissed from his post-retirement job in June due to indiscipline, allegedly used his Activa scooter to carry the stolen arms, including five assault rifles and seven pistols, out of the heavily guarded cantonment.
Investigators believe Mallesh, who served for 16 years, planned the meticulously executed theft as an act of revenge. He had conducted a two-day reconnaissance of the armoury prior to the heist. The case was resolved after Mallesh's wife confronted him, leading to his surrender and the recovery of the weapons from an open field in Nagarkurnool district.
