Constable jailed 10 years for Apple exec murder
21 Sep
Summary
- Constable sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for murder.
- Apple executive Vivek Tiwari was fatally shot in 2018.
- Co-accused constable acquitted; victim's family plans appeal.
In a significant judicial development, constable Prashant Kumar Chaudhary received a 10-year rigorous imprisonment sentence on Monday for the 2018 murder of Apple executive Vivek Tiwari. The court also levied a Rs 20,000 fine, with an additional two months of imprisonment for non-payment. The sentencing follows Chaudhary's conviction under Section 304 Part II of the IPC, classifying his act as culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The incident occurred on September 29, 2018, when Chaudhary and co-accused Sandeep Kumar signaled Tiwari to stop his SUV in Gomti Nagar Extension. After Sandeep allegedly assaulted Tiwari's passenger, Chaudhary fired his service pistol, fatally wounding Tiwari. Tiwari's vehicle subsequently crashed into a divider. While Chaudhary was convicted, Sandeep Kumar was acquitted of charges, a decision Vivek Tiwari's wife, Kalpana, has decried as injustice. She stated the family would appeal both the sentence and the acquittal in a higher court, asserting the incident was a clear case of murder.
