- Three guinea pigs euthanized due to severe neglect and unsanitary conditions.
A woman residing in Stowmarket, Suffolk, has received a 10-year ban on owning all animals, with the exception of dogs, after her pets were found living in unsanitary conditions. Investigators discovered injured cats, chinchillas confined to a cupboard, and guinea pigs in crates, prompting immediate action.
The woman admitted to three charges of failing to ensure her animals' welfare needs were met. She was sentenced to a suspended jail term of 18 weeks, a fine of £769, and ordered to pay £300 in costs and a £154 victim surcharge. The RSPCA reported that the animals were deprived of basic necessities and veterinary care, causing them unnecessary suffering.
Upon inspection, authorities found 73 guinea pigs, 17 cats, and five chinchillas in dire straits. The cats' living space was described as having a strong ammonia smell and being infested with flies. Many were unneutered, exhibiting signs of illness like cat flu and untreated eye conditions, with some suffering wounds from fighting. The vet at the scene deemed the environment one of the worst for cats they had encountered.
The guinea pigs were housed in inadequate conditions, including tiny tubs with insufficient water and stacked crates, with one young piglet being trampled by others. The chinchillas were found lethargic and depressed in unsecured cages within a cupboard. As a consequence of this neglect, three guinea pigs died, and others required treatment for lice and eye removal. Many cats showed signs of prolonged suffering, with untreated eye conditions and low body weight.
