A 52-year-old man has been arrested following the theft of ancient Egyptian artifacts from the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology in Caboolture, north of Brisbane. The man, who had no fixed address, was apprehended on Russell Island on Saturday evening.
Police allege that most of the stolen items, including a 3,300-year-old necklace and a mummy mask, were discovered inside a camper van parked at the Cleveland ferry terminal. The valuable 2,600-year-old wooden cat sculpture, dating back to ancient Egypt's 26th dynasty, was reportedly found in the suspect's possession.
The artifacts, which appeared to have sustained only minor damage, were stolen from the museum around 3 am on Friday. The suspect has been charged with breaking and entering and three counts of wilful damage, concluding a two-day search for the stolen treasures.
