Eni Aluko Wins Libel Case Against Joey Barton
10 Mar
Summary
- Eni Aluko awarded over £300,000 in libel damages.
- Joey Barton made damaging social media posts in 2024.
- Barton currently in custody on separate charges.

Former England footballer Eni Aluko has been awarded more than £300,000 in damages and legal costs after a libel case against Joey Barton. The High Court halted proceedings, ordering Barton to pay "substantial" damages following two social media posts made in 2024.
Aluko's legal team stated Barton wrongly claimed she exploited her status and was a hypocrite. One post included an image of Aluko's head superimposed onto serial killer Rosemary West's body, described as a "deliberately targeted public campaign of vilification."
Barton, who has managed Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers, was not present at the hearing as he is currently being held in custody after being charged with assault. He has accepted that his campaign against Aluko amounted to harassment.
A court order details Barton must pay £339,000, with a significant portion due by March 24. Justice Nicholas Lavender granted Barton seven days to request changes to the payment order.
