On November 2nd, 2022, tragedy struck on I-24 in Dade County, Georgia when a 21-year-old U.S. airman was killed in a hit-and-run crash. Demetrius Norwood III had pulled over to the side of the highway to change a tire on his vehicle. As he knelt on the driver's side, a passing truck swerved, and the trailer it was towing struck Norwood.
The driver of the truck did not stop after the collision, and Norwood was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. An obituary states that Norwood had completed basic training and was serving as a Service Journeyman in the Air Force, earning several honors including the Air and Space Achievement Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Georgia State troopers are still searching for the driver and vehicle involved in the fatal incident. Detectives are urging anyone with information about the crash to come forward and assist in the investigation. The loss of this young airman has left his family and the military community devastated.
