6 Feb
Summary
- AI-generated images falsely linked Jeffrey Epstein to Mira Nair and Zohran Mamdani.
- Fact-checkers confirmed the images were entirely or partially created by artificial intelligence.
- A parody account admitted to creating the fabricated images for entertainment.
Images purportedly showing convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein with Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani have been confirmed as AI-generated fabrications. The fake photographs emerged shortly after the US Department of Justice released new documents related to the Epstein investigation. Fact-checkers utilized AI detection tools, which revealed SynthID watermarks in every image, indicating they were wholly or partially created by artificial intelligence.
Further verification by X's community notes and an independent fact-checking team revealed inconsistencies with Zohran Mamdani's age. The notes stated that Mamdani was 18 in 2009, contradicting depictions of him as a baby or preteen in the fabricated images. The original images were traced back to an X account known for creating AI-generated memes, which later admitted to their creation, stating they were made for content.
