A 65-year-old hospital cleaner in China has been exposed for using artificial intelligence to defraud a businessman of approximately $25,000. The suspect, identified as Yu Xiuzhen, meticulously crafted a fake online identity over five years, posing as a 29-year-old physician. She utilized digital face-swapping software to generate around 7,000 videos and photos, amassing about 10,000 followers.
Yu convinced a property contractor, Liu Hui, that her supposed medical position granted her influence over construction contracts. She initiated a romantic online relationship with Liu, consistently avoiding in-person meetings. To further the deception, Yu adopted a second persona, that of her own mother, demanding a bride price and an apartment.
Liu transferred 170,000 yuan over five months, believing her claims. When no business deals materialized, he alerted the authorities. Investigators uncovered Yu's true identity, a cleaner with a prior fraud conviction. The stolen funds were used for cosmetic surgery, skincare, and clothing. Digital disclaimers on her AI-generated content were overlooked by Liu, who was unfamiliar with such technology.
