- The settlement marks a historic payout in a copyright infringement lawsuit.

A significant copyright infringement case brought by authors against AI company Anthropic has concluded with a substantial settlement agreement. Anthropic is set to pay a total of $1.5 billion, with qualifying authors to receive $3,000 per work. The lawsuit alleged that Anthropic used over 500,000 copyrighted works downloaded from pirated content websites to train its Claude AI chatbot.
Nearly 100,000 claims have been submitted by authors since the process opened, with a very small fraction opting out. As part of the settlement, Anthropic has certified that no pirated content was used in released Claude models and has committed to destroying any infringing copies. The court is scheduled to hear the motion for final approval on April 23, with March 30 being the last day for claims.
This landmark agreement, approved in September 2025, is the first of its kind involving a major AI company and is poised to be the largest copyright payout in history. Writers' groups have expressed strong support for the settlement, highlighting its importance for authors' rights in the digital age.
