A 66-year-old woman from Vasai has been defrauded of Rs 12 lakh due to a sophisticated cyber fraud. Cybercriminals created an AI-generated video featuring a deepfake of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, promising financial aid to the needy.
The victim encountered the scam on Instagram on July 27. She contacted the fraudsters, who initially asked for a small processing fee. As trust was built, they convinced her that she would receive Rs 77 lakh from abroad, contingent upon paying taxes and other charges.
Over a ten-day period, the woman procured Rs 12 lakh by taking a loan from a credit society, pledging her jewelry, and withdrawing funds from her daughter's account. These funds were transferred to accounts specified by the perpetrators.
Upon not receiving the promised aid, the woman realized she had been deceived and reported the incident to Waliv police. A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.
