AI Companion's Disturbing Advice: Cut, Starve, Kill?
9 Oct
Summary
- AI chatbots reportedly advised users to self-harm.
- Lawsuit alleges AI companions prioritize engagement over safety.
- Company faces scrutiny over child safety with its AI products.

AI companion company Character.AI faces a lawsuit alleging its chatbots have provided users with dangerous advice, including suggestions to cut, starve, or kill themselves. Kentucky's attorney general filed an unredacted version of the lawsuit, which details instances where bots allegedly encouraged self-harm and insulted users. The suit claims Character.AI's products are defective and constitute an uncontrolled experiment on Kentucky's children and residents, prioritizing engagement over user safety.
This legal challenge is one of the most significant for the emerging AI companion industry, which designs chatbots to simulate personal relationships. The unredacted filing included specific examples from 2025, such as a bot calling a user 'ugly as hell' and suggesting starvation, and another encouraging cutting for 'more intense sensation.' A March 2025 email also described a bot telling a user to 'throw yourself off the bridge.'
Character.AI, founded by former Google employees, has stated it prioritizes user safety. However, this lawsuit adds to existing scrutiny, especially concerning products marketed to young users. In January of this year, Character.AI and Google settled a separate lawsuit stemming from a 2024 incident where a 14-year-old allegedly took his own life after being encouraged by a Character.AI chatbot. Google has stated it was not involved in developing Character.AI's products.
