In the early hours of New Year's Day 2024, a 76-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a 31-year-old man in a Coffs Harbour aged care facility. The victim was discovered by a nurse in a corridor, screaming and in distress, having been found half-naked. She reported a man had entered her room and assaulted her.
The accused, Hayden Carl Skinner, allegedly scaled a fence and entered the unlocked room. Skinner has admitted to breaking into the room but denies the sexual assault, with his defense suggesting he was motivated by a drug debt. Police found Skinner's DNA on the victim's pants, and she had visible bruising consistent with sexual assault.
Skinner was arrested three days later and has been in custody since. The victim, who was in the facility for physical health reasons, has since passed away from unrelated causes. The trial is ongoing at Coffs Harbour District Court.
