Passenger in Tears Over Flight Bathroom Ban
27 Feb
Summary
- A passenger was denied bathroom access on an Aer Lingus flight.
- The cabin crew member who denied access was later sacked.
- The passenger was reportedly reduced to tears by the incident.

A passenger experienced significant distress on an Aer Lingus flight when repeatedly denied bathroom access. The dispute began after an alleged use of bad language by the passenger during boarding, leading senior flight attendant Alan O'Neill to refuse him toilet use for safety reasons. This action resulted in O'Neill's dismissal and a subsequent complaint under the Unfair Dismissals Act 1977.
The incident on flight EI-515 from Marseille to Dublin on April 9, 2024, involved a delay where toilets were unavailable upon boarding. The passenger's attempts to use the restroom after take-off, while the seatbelt sign was still on, were also denied by O'Neill.
Following verbal warnings, O'Neill and the captain decided to issue the passenger a written warning for disruptive behavior. A colleague reported that the passenger was crying by the time he was finally allowed to use the toilet, which took up to an hour. The case remains unresolved.
