Bengali actress Rupa Umashankar Dutta, 43, has been granted bail by a Metropolitan Magistrate's Court following her arrest last week in Colaba. She was apprehended for allegedly stealing valuables amounting to Rs 1.48 lakh. Dutta, known for her roles in Hindi and Bengali cinema including 'Sathi', was released on a Rs 50,000 personal bond.
The court mandated that Dutta not tamper with evidence or leave the country without permission. The case stems from a complaint filed by Dimple Singhvi, who reported the theft of a diamond-studded gold bracelet worth Rs 1.20 lakh, Rs 10,000 cash, and other items on July 12, 2026. Police investigation, aided by CCTV footage showing Dutta following the complainant, led to her arrest on July 6. Some of the stolen property was recovered.
This is not Dutta's first brush with the law; she was previously arrested in 2022 for pickpocketing at the Kolkata Book Fair. Her defense counsel argued that she was falsely implicated and a victim of circumstances.
