Summary
- Defendant found mentally incompetent for murder trial proceedings.
- Actor James Handy was stabbed outside his girlfriend's home.
- Suspect ordered to undergo involuntary medication for one year.

A judge has ruled that Michael Gledhill, 44, is not mentally competent to face criminal proceedings for the alleged murder of actor James Handy. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Maria Cavalluzzi determined that Gledhill cannot comprehend the case against him nor rationally aid his legal counsel.
Handy, 81, an actor with credits including 'Jumanji' and 'Top Gun: Maverick,' was discovered stabbed in the chest outside his girlfriend's residence on June 3. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Gledhill, who is the son of Handy's girlfriend, was apprehended after reporting himself to the police. Following psychiatric evaluations, the court found him unfit for trial and also determined he cannot make proper medication decisions.
The judge has ordered that Gledhill may receive involuntary medication for up to one year, based on a psychiatrist's assessment of potential significant improvement with appropriate drugs. A hearing is scheduled for July 14 to discuss his long-term placement.
Handy was a prolific character actor who appeared in numerous films and television programs over several decades.
