Accused Killer Flees to Italy, Seeks Asylum
28 May
Summary
- Suspect fled U.S. before capital murder trial date.
- He cut off ankle monitor and traveled to Italy.
- His trial is delayed indefinitely as he awaits extradition.

Lee Gilley, charged with capital murder in the death of his pregnant wife, Christa Bauer Gilley, and their unborn child, fled the United States before his scheduled trial. Gilley was arrested in October 2024 after his wife was found unresponsive, initially reported as a suicide. However, her death was later ruled a homicide.
Gilley was released on a $1 million bond and ordered to wear an ankle monitor. In May 2026, just weeks before his trial was set to begin on May 29, he allegedly cut off the monitor and fled the country. He traveled through Canada before reaching Italy.
In Italy, Gilley used forged Belgian identification documents and traveled under an alias. He appeared in court in Turin on May 11, proclaiming his innocence and stating he fled to avoid being killed. He is currently detained in Italy.
Christa's family attorney expressed devastation over his flight. Gilley's defense attorney suggests Christa died from a rare blood disorder. Extradition to the U.S., where the capital murder charge carries a potential death penalty, may be blocked due to Italy's abolition of capital punishment. His trial has been indefinitely delayed.
