A friend's testimony has detailed the alleged abuse Tarryn Baird suffered before her death by suicide in November 2017. Christopher Trybus, Baird's husband, is on trial at Winchester Crown Court, facing charges of manslaughter, two counts of rape, and controlling and coercive behavior. The prosecution alleges Trybus is legally responsible for Baird's death due to his extensive and escalating abusive conduct.
Jurors were presented with text messages between Baird and her friend, Elizabeth Clarke, in which Baird described escalating abuse from January 2017. She reported physical attacks, resulting in hospital visits and concussions, and detailed her husband's constant monitoring. Baird expressed feeling like a "total mess," "drained and defeated," and sought advice from Women's Aid.
Clarke testified that Baird showed her bruises on her eye and abdomen and shared phone images of injuries. Baird also requested her friend provide an alibi, stating Trybus had tracked her to the hospital. Despite the couple's apparent affluent lifestyle, described as owning Porsche vehicles and taking fancy holidays, Clarke observed Baird appearing isolated.
Trybus, who moved to the UK with Baird from South Africa in 2007, denies all charges. The trial continues as the court examines the alleged coercive control, which included threats of violence, sexual assault, financial control, and isolation from family. The prosecution maintains Trybus's actions led to Baird's death.
