Summary
- A 26-year-old died after weight loss surgery in Turkey.
- Her parents won £858,000 compensation for her estate.
- Inadequate post-operative care was cited in the ruling.

A British family has been awarded £858,000 in compensation following the tragic death of their 26-year-old daughter, Khelisyah Ashamu, after a budget weight loss surgery in Turkey. Miss Ashamu died in February 2019, eight days after undergoing a gastric bypass in Izmir.
Her parents launched a High Court claim against the medical tourism agency, Get Slim in Turkey, alleging inadequate post-operative care. The agency's organiser denied liability, but the judge ruled against her.
Senior judge Mrs Justice Obi accepted expert evidence of insufficient monitoring and care after a follow-up surgery. She found the agency liable for the proper performance of the surgery and aftercare.
Miss Ashamu, an IT worker from Romford, had sought the procedure due to concerns about her weight and appearance after a Caesarean section. She paid £3,300 for the package.
After the initial operation on February 1, 2019, she experienced significant pain and underwent further surgery on February 3. She was moved to intensive care but tragically suffered a cardiac arrest and died on February 9, 2019.
The court heard her life support was withdrawn without her father's presence. The judge expressed condolences to the parents, acknowledging that the payout could not lessen their profound loss.
