A man in Thiruvananthapuram has been sentenced to a significant 83 years of rigorous imprisonment for the sexual assault of his 11-year-old niece. The fast-track special court handed down the severe penalty to the 40-year-old convict, also imposing a Rs 1 lakh fine, with an additional four years to be served if the fine is not paid.
The offenses occurred in April 2021 when the victim's aunt was in the hospital for childbirth. The perpetrator assaulted his niece twice in the family home. The frightened child initially kept silent about the incidents until they were revealed during a counseling session at her school.
The prosecution was handled by Special Public Prosecutor R S Vijay Mohan, while the investigation was conducted by Medical College CI P Harilal and SI Priya A L. The court's decision aims to ensure justice for the survivor and deter similar heinous crimes.
