11 Mar
Summary
- Anonymous tip uncovered a murder hidden for eight months.
- Victim was a cook who had cut ties with his family.
- Five individuals arrested, including dhaba owner and son.

A murder that remained undiscovered for nearly eight months was brought to light by an anonymous tip-off in Ramtek. The victim, 50-year-old cook Pratap Singh Bais from Mumbai, was killed and buried in July 2025. His estranged relationship with his family meant his disappearance was never reported, leaving the crime hidden.
Following the tip on March 9, 2026, the local crime branch launched an investigation. Cops detained three dhaba employees who confessed to burying the body on the owner's farmland. This led to the arrest of the dhaba owner, Kailash Thackeray, and his son, Piyush Thackeray.
Piyush allegedly strangled Bais after an argument over a stolen mobile phone and an insult regarding unpaid wages. The victim's body was exhumed from a field in Navargaon on Monday, March 10, 2026. Post-mortem confirmed death by strangulation. All five accused have been arrested and charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023.
