A federal grand jury in Texas has indicted an 11-person smuggling ring following the tragic deaths of seven migrants. The victims, including a 14-year-old child, were found deceased in May inside a sealed shipping container in San Antonio, having succumbed to heatstroke. Temperatures inside the container reached 92 degrees Fahrenheit, with no ventilation or cooling systems present.
The smuggling operation, which had been active since April 2023, reportedly utilized train cars to move migrants across the U.S.-Mexico border. During a stop in San Antonio on May 9, prosecutors claim the alleged smugglers discovered seven individuals in peril but fled the scene, leaving some of the deceased behind.
A Union Pacific worker discovered a leg protruding from the container at a Laredo rail yard, alerting authorities. The victims comprised four Mexican nationals and three Honduran nationals. The 11 accused smugglers face potential life sentences if convicted on charges related to conspiracy and transporting illegal aliens resulting in death. Nine suspects have been apprehended, while two remain at large.
