Tragic Gunfight Leaves 3 Dead in Columbia Park

A fatal gunfight in a Columbia, South Carolina park on Saturday morning resulted in the deaths of two people and an injured police officer. The incident began around 9:30 a.m. when a woman reported that a man, against whom she had a restraining order, was causing property damage at her home. Officer Christopher DeLong responded to the scene and was later killed in the ensuing gunfight.
While searching for the suspect, Officer DeLong spotted a man matching the description provided by the woman. Backup officer David Dymock arrived, and shortly thereafter, radioed that both officers had been shot and the suspect was down. The deceased suspect was identified as Adam Tyler Dowdy, 33, who had prior arrests in at least four states. Officer DeLong, 29, had served two years with the Columbia Police Department and is survived by his wife and two young children. Officer Dymock remains in stable condition. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting.
