A significant drug trafficking network operating in the northern Manitoba community of Bunibonibee Cree Nation has been dismantled, leading to the arrest and charging of 27 individuals. The month-long investigation, known as Project Derry, uncovered a criminal organization responsible for importing and distributing drugs, alcohol, and weapons.
During the operation, law enforcement seized an estimated $1.2 million in illicit substances, firearms, and contraband. The arrested suspects face a total of 51 charges. Authorities emphasized the direct link between the drug trade and the concerning rise in violence observed in many First Nation communities across Manitoba.
The seized items included large quantities of cocaine, OxyContin, fentanyl, carfentanil, and alcohol. While 23 suspects have been arrested, including the suspected leader apprehended last month, four individuals are still at large. The investigation involved collaboration with local First Nation safety officers and police detachments in various locations.
