- The 2023 data breach exposed personal and genetic data of nearly 7 million users.
- California AG filed a new lawsuit seeking fines against 23andMe's successor company.

A bankruptcy judge in St. Louis, Missouri, has given the green light to a $46.75 million settlement for millions of 23andMe users. This payout is a result of a massive data breach that occurred in 2023, exposing the personal and genetic information of almost 7 million users. The settlement process began earlier this year, with impacted customers applying for their share in January and a final deadline in February.
Since the 2023 breach, 23andMe has undergone significant changes. The company filed for bankruptcy in March 2025 and was subsequently sold to a nonprofit led by its co-founder, Anne Wojcicki, now operating as Chrome Holding Co. While much of the legal fallout from the breach is being resolved through this settlement, California's Attorney General Rob Bonta recently filed a separate lawsuit against Chrome Holding Co. This new legal challenge alleges the company failed to implement adequate data security and ignored known vulnerabilities, potentially leading to further financial penalties.
