Robert McCaffrey, 54, has been arrested in Manteo, North Carolina, for the June 23, 1990, murder of Lisa Marie McBride in New Jersey. The arrest was announced by Sussex County Prosecutor Daniel M. Perez, who stated McCaffrey was taken into custody by a multistate task force and is pending extradition.
McBride was reported missing after a night out in New York City and was last seen returning to her home in Vernon Township, New Jersey, around 2 a.m. Police found her home disturbed, with the telephone line cut from outside. Her body was discovered by a hunter in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area on October 20, 1990.
Advancements in DNA technology in 2022 led investigators to name McCaffrey as a suspect. He will face charges of first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, and second-degree burglary upon his arrival in New Jersey.
McCaffrey was previously a suspect in the disappearance of his wife, Gayle McCaffrey, in West Ashley, South Carolina, who vanished on March 18, 2012. He was charged with obstruction of justice in connection to her disappearance after investigators determined he fabricated a farewell letter and lied about elements of the case. He was released from prison in 2023 after serving a sentence for the obstruction charge. Gayle's disappearance remains an unsolved homicide. The Charleston County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate.
