26 Sep
Summary
- Newborn remains found wrapped in 1910 newspaper.
- Inquest confirmed baby was deliberately strangled alive.
- Police investigation included DNA and expert analysis.

During renovation work in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, a builder uncovered the century-old remains of an unidentified infant. The baby, now known as Baby Auckland, was found wrapped in newspaper dated 1910, with twine around its neck. An inquest confirmed that the newborn skeleton had been deliberately strangled while alive, a finding deemed homicide by the coroner.
Despite a thorough police investigation involving DNA testing, radiocarbon experts, and forensic anthropologists, no record of the baby's existence was found. The coroner noted that due to the passage of time, criminal proceedings were not possible. The builder, who found the remains in July 2024, described experiencing flashbacks but found peace after the baby received a funeral ceremony on April 27, 2026.
