The vehicle, carrying the child, his mother, and a friend, was reportedly stopped by police in response to a shoplifting call. Authorities state the vehicle drove toward officers as they attempted to initiate a stop, leading to the officer discharging their weapon at the car.
The mother was physically unharmed, but her friend sustained serious injuries in the shooting. Both women transported themselves and the child to a hospital, where Kohen Wiley was pronounced deceased.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting. The Senatobia Police Department and Tate County Sheriff's Office, also present at the scene, have stated they are cooperating and will release verified information as it becomes available.
