Tesla Unveils Longer-Range Model Y L in China Amid EV Price War
18 Aug
Summary
- Tesla to launch new 6-seat Model Y L in China
- Tesla's China sales fell 8.4% in July as rivals offer lower-priced EVs
- Tesla also introducing longer-range, rear-wheel drive Model 3 in China
In a move to refresh its lineup in China, Tesla has announced that its Model Y L, a 6-seat version of the best-selling Model Y with a longer wheelbase, will be "coming soon" to the Chinese market. The announcement was made by the electric vehicle company on the Chinese social media platform Weibo on August 16, 2025.
The introduction of the Model Y L comes as Tesla faces growing competition in China, with the recent launch of Xiaomi's YU7 model. Additionally, Tesla reported an 8.4% decline in July 2025 sales of its China-made electric vehicles, as Chinese competitors continue to offer lower-priced EVs amid an ongoing price war that has impacted automakers, suppliers, and dealerships.
Alongside the Model Y L, Tesla is also bringing a longer-range, rear-wheel drive version of its Model 3 to the Chinese market, according to information published on China's industry ministry website in July 2025. This move is likely an attempt by the company to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving Chinese electric vehicle market.
