As of August 3rd, 2025, Tata Group's hospitality firm Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has a strong presence in India's North East region, with a portfolio of 15 hotels comprising 1,348 rooms. The company is further expanding its footprint in the region, with 6 new hotels with 634 rooms currently in the pipeline.
IHCL's Managing Director and CEO, Puneet Chhatwal, has stated that developing properties in the East and North East has been a strategic initiative for the company, aligning with India's ambition of promoting the growth and development of the North East. Chhatwal noted that the North East is the latest focus area for IHCL, similar to how Goa, Kerala, and Lakshadweep were in the past.
Some of the new projects IHCL is undertaking in the North East include a hotel in Jagiroad, Assam, opposite the upcoming Tata Electronics factory. The company is also upgrading its existing Vivanta hotel in Guwahati to a Taj property, with an extension to include additional rooms and banquet facilities. Additionally, IHCL is building a new hotel in Kaziranga, Assam.
Furthermore, the company has signed its first 'Taj Palace' property in the North East, the 'Taj Pushpabanta Palace' in Agartala, Tripura. This property, which was a holiday home for the king and his guests, will be refurbished and expanded to have 100 rooms in a newly built structure, in a public-private partnership with the Tripura government.
IHCL's expansion in the North East is part of its broader strategy to grow its presence across the East and North East regions of India.
