Pune Developers Required to Display Project Names in Marathi
8 Aug
Summary
- PMC directive makes Marathi project names mandatory
- MNS demanded Marathi names, now enforced by civic administration
- Developers must prominently display Marathi names on all projects

In a significant move, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has directed all developers within its jurisdiction to prominently display the names of their residential and commercial projects in Marathi. This directive, issued on Friday, is a response to a demand made by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) party.
The PMC commissioner, Naval Kishore Ram, stated that with Marathi now having the status of a classical language, it is mandatory for all projects under the PMC's purview to feature their names in Marathi. This decision aims to promote the use of the regional language and ensure its visibility in the city's construction landscape.
According to Prashant Kanojia, an MNS member, many developers were previously not following the mandate to include Marathi names. However, with the civic administration's directive, it has now become compulsory for them to do so. Kanojia emphasized the need for the PMC to monitor the effective implementation of this order, suggesting that a team of officials should visit each construction site to verify the presence of Marathi project names.
The PMC has seen a consistent increase in the number of building permissions granted over the years, with 1,709 permissions issued in 2023-24, up from 956 in the previous fiscal year. In the 2024-25 financial year, the number further rose to 3,359. This directive is expected to have a significant impact on the city's construction landscape, as developers must now adapt to the new language requirement.
