NBN Co Inks Deal with Amazon's Project Kuiper for Rural Broadband

Summary
- NBN Co signs agreement with Amazon's Project Kuiper
- Project Kuiper to provide city-quality broadband to 300,000 rural/regional premises
- NBN Co to phase out aging Sky Muster satellite service by early 2030s

As of August 5th, 2025, NBN Co, the company responsible for Australia's National Broadband Network, has announced a significant agreement with Amazon's Project Kuiper. This deal will see Project Kuiper, a satellite-based internet service, provide high-speed broadband to approximately 300,000 rural and regional Australian premises starting in the middle of 2026.
The partnership marks a shift away from NBN Co's current Sky Muster satellite service, which has been criticized by users for offering inferior speeds compared to traditional fixed-line broadband and newer satellite options like Elon Musk's Starlink. NBN Co now plans to phase out the aging Sky Muster service by the early 2030s, in favor of the city-quality broadband promised by Project Kuiper's Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation.
"Today we can announce that NBN has reached agreement with Amazon's Project Kuiper to deliver city-quality broadband to remote Australia," stated Communications Minister Anika Wells during a press conference in North Sydney. This deal represents a significant step forward in providing reliable and high-speed internet access to Australia's rural and regional communities, which have long struggled with subpar connectivity.
