Mahindra Unveils Flexible EV Platform to Meet Global Emission Norms
15 Aug
Summary
- Mahindra to develop new petrol, diesel, and electric models on common platform
- Platform allows flexibility to adjust products based on market demand
- New SUV models based on NU_IQ platform to launch in 2027

On August 15, 2025, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. announced its plans to develop a new vehicle platform, NU_IQ, that will allow the company to produce petrol, diesel, and electric models. This move is aimed at providing Mahindra the flexibility to meet global emission norms and quickly adjust its product offerings based on market demand.
As part of this announcement, Mahindra unveiled design prototypes of four new sports utility vehicles (SUVs) that will be based on the NU_IQ platform. These new SUV models are expected to begin arriving in the markets in 2027. However, the company did not commit to the launch of hybrid vehicles just yet.
Mahindra's decision to develop a versatile platform comes at a time when the Indian automobile market is becoming increasingly competitive. The company is locked in a fierce battle with rivals like Hyundai Motor India and Tata Motors to secure the second spot in the country's pecking order. Mahindra's group CEO, Anish Shah, noted that Indian automakers are now at the forefront of technology, scale, and ambitions, after a period of dominance by foreign carmakers.
The development of the NU_IQ platform also aligns with the upcoming CAFE 3 (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) norms in India, which are scheduled to come into force in 2027. These new regulations aim to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles, pushing automakers to produce more fuel-efficient models. Mahindra's executive director and CEO, Rajesh Jejurikar, emphasized that the NU_IQ platform will allow the company to quickly adjust its production between diesel, petrol, and electric vehicles to meet the emission norms effectively.
