India to Construct 350 Airports by 2047 for 'Viksit Bharat'
25 Aug
Summary
- Government plans to more than double India's airports to 350 by 2047
- Focus on strengthening state aviation sectors, including new projects in Odisha
- Seaplane operations and heliports to be expanded in regions without viable airports

According to the Indian government's long-term plans, the country is set to see a significant expansion of its aviation infrastructure. As of August 2025, India has 162 airports, but the government now intends to more than double this number to 350 by the year 2047.
This ambitious goal is part of the government's 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India) vision, with a focus on strengthening the aviation sectors of individual states. The Union Civil Aviation Minister, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, has announced new infrastructure projects for the state of Odisha, including a new terminal building at the Bhubaneswar airport and an "in-principle approval" for a new airport in Puri.
Beyond airports, the government is also looking to expand seaplane operations and develop heliports in regions where traditional airports are not viable. The minister stated that two seaplanes are expected to arrive in the country by October 2025, with plans to initiate operations in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh.
