DWP Warns of Scam Texts Targeting Benefit Recipients Ahead of Bank Holiday
19 Aug
Summary
- DWP urges caution against scam text messages
- Millions to receive early benefit payments for August bank holiday
- No one should have to choose between school supplies and food

On August 19, 2025, the UK's Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a warning to millions of people claiming benefits or the state pension about scam text messages that could drain their bank accounts.
The DWP has urged caution, advising recipients to be wary of any suspicious links or requests for personal or financial details, and to only engage with trusted official sources. The department has encouraged people to report any suspicious messages to Action Fraud UK.
This warning comes as the DWP confirms that millions of people will receive their benefits or state pension early this weekend due to the August bank holiday on August 25. Payments normally due on that date will instead be made on Friday, August 22.
The DWP's Minister for Social Security and Disability, Sir Stephen Timms, emphasized the importance of ensuring families have the support they need, especially ahead of the new school year. He stated that "no family should have to choose between buying school supplies and putting food on the table," and that this early payment is part of the government's "Plan for Change" to prioritize working families and the most vulnerable.
The frequency of benefit payments varies, with Universal Credit paid monthly and Tax Credits typically every four weeks or weekly. Child Benefit is usually paid every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday.
