Summary
- Hiring for longevity startup Temple requires engineers to meet strict fitness criteria.
- Applicants must have body fat below 16% for men and 26% for women, or commit to achieving it.
- Legal experts suggest fitness clauses are permissible if clearly defined and non-discriminatory.

Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal's new longevity venture, Temple, has set a high bar for its engineering hires, requiring them to be supremely fit. The startup, launched in 2025 with the goal of enhancing human healthspan, is seeking professionals in areas like analog systems, electronics design, and machine learning.
Goyal specified that applicants must have body fat below 16% for men and 26% for women, or demonstrate a commitment to achieving these levels within three months. Legal advisors indicate that such health criteria can be included in employment contracts, provided they are clearly defined and do not discriminate based on protected characteristics.
However, legal experts also noted that conditioning job confirmation on achieving a physical outcome within a set timeframe could be challenged as an indefinite probation. While some industries accept fitness as a job requirement, any criteria must be non-arbitrary and offer equal opportunities. Temple has secured $54 million in initial funding and aims to build advanced wearables for elite athletes.
