Zanzibar's Cyber City: Tech Hub or Digital Frontier?

Zanzibar is developing Dunia Cyber City, a significant special economic zone on Fumba Peninsula, with the goal of becoming a leading tech hub for East Africa. This ambitious project, a collaboration between OurWorld and the Zanzibari government, aims to attract global tech talent and businesses. The initiative is inspired by the 'network state' concept, focusing on digital sovereignty and open-source technologies.

The city plans to offer attractive incentives, including favorable tax rates for remote workers and businesses, and a digital residency program. This strategy is designed to create an environment conducive to technological experimentation and innovation, drawing parallels to successful hubs like Singapore. The project's foundation lies in creating a digitally-enabled community, with aspirations to foster a unique ecosystem.

As of early July, the designated land for Dunia Cyber City was undeveloped, but construction is slated to begin soon. The project has secured necessary governmental approvals, with a 30-year land lease granted. Partners are currently fundraising for the city's development, signaling a significant push towards establishing this futuristic tech enclave.
