The Punjab Sakhi Shakti Mela in Sangrur is showcasing the entrepreneurial spirit of women, with Mamta Rani and her Baba Kapoor Das Self-Help Group standing out. Five years ago, this group of 11 women from Kanakwal Bhanguan village began with a modest Rs 20,000, initially producing laundry detergent and phenyl. Their venture has since blossomed into a thriving business exceeding Rs 2 lakh in earnings.
Their product line now impressively includes honey, turmeric, various masalas, soaps, and cleaning agents. This expansion was significantly aided by a one-week training program from Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kheri and Punjab Agricultural University. The Sangrur district administration, through the PAHAL institution, further supported them by providing a platform for sales at a weekly market.
Mamta Rani encourages other homemakers to explore entrepreneurship through government schemes like the Punjab State Rural Livelihood Mission. The ongoing Mela, running until November 30, aims to provide similar opportunities for home-based artisans and craftswomen to display and sell their creations, contributing to the economic empowerment of households.
