Wizz Air Shifts Half M.East Flights to Europe
12 Mar
Summary
- Wizz Air is moving half its Middle East flights to Europe until September.
- The Iran war is impacting travel demand, favoring European destinations.
- Wizz Air cut annual guidance by €50 million due to the war.

Wizz Air is significantly adjusting its flight operations, reallocating about half of its Middle East capacity, which amounts to 25 to 30 daily flights, to European leisure and city destinations. This redistribution, planned until September, includes popular spots in Croatia, Spain, Portugal, and Italy. The decision stems from the ongoing conflict in Iran, which is expected to redirect travel demand away from the Middle East and into Europe.
According to Wizz Air's head, Jozsef Varadi, passengers are increasingly wary of being stranded due to airspace restrictions affecting Gulf airlines. This situation makes connecting traffic through the Middle East more challenging, prompting travelers to reconsider long-haul trips to Asia and opt for domestic European travel instead. The airline had previously closed its Abu Dhabi base last year, reducing its exposure to the Middle East.
The current geopolitical climate presents another challenge for Wizz Air, following issues with Pratt & Whitney engines, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and the Israel-Hamas conflict. Consequently, the airline recently revised its annual guidance downwards, anticipating a €50 million ($58.2 million) reduction in net income. Future guidance for fiscal year 2026 is also projected to fall below its previous forecast range.
