Summary
- Wipro announced a Rs 15,000 crore share buyback program.
- The buyback price is set at Rs 250 per share, a 23% premium.
- June 5 is the record date for shareholders to participate.

Wipro has announced a Rs 15,000 crore share buyback, setting June 5 as the record date. The IT services major will repurchase up to 60 crore shares, representing 5.7 percent of its total paid-up capital, at Rs 250 per share. This buyback price offers a 23 percent premium over the stock's recent closing price of Rs 203.11 on the NSE, marking the company's first buyback in nearly three years.
The repurchasing will occur via the tender route. All investors holding Wipro shares in their demat accounts on the record date, including those who transitioned from American Depository Receipts, are eligible. Company promoters and promoter groups have also shared their intention to participate.
Market regular guidelines mandate that 15 percent of the total buyback offer size be reserved for small shareholders. Consequently, about 9 crore shares worth Rs 2,250 crore are allocated for retail investors who hold shares valued up to Rs 2 lakh on the record date.
Analysts suggest that retail investors seeking short-term gains consider purchasing Wipro shares. Based on the company's historical buybacks and low retail shareholding, market experts project a high acceptance ratio. While calculations based on recent shareholding patterns estimate a minimum entitlement ratio of around 30.8 percent for retail investors, analysts expect the final acceptance ratio could range between 50 percent and 60 percent. This scenario could yield potential pre-tax returns of 11 to 13 percent within a two-to-three-month timeframe. Although retail participation typically increases closer to the record date, the eligibility threshold of 800 shares keeps expectations for the final acceptance rate optimistic.
Market experts view the buyback as a solid tactical opportunity with a balanced risk-reward profile, characterized by limited downside and attractive upside potential. However, final outcomes remain dependent on participation dynamics. Further specifics regarding the official buyback window and the final entitlement ratio will be disclosed at a later date.
