.WEB Domain Finally Launches, Disrupting Internet Market
28 Sep
Summary
- .WEB TLD, delayed since 2016 auction, launches later this year.
- Verisign to offer .WEB domains, aiming to rival .COM and .AI.
- Businesses must educate users on .WEB to build trust and adoption.
The .WEB top-level domain (TLD) is on the verge of market entry, years after its contentious auction in 2016. This new generic domain is poised to challenge established players like .COM and emerging contenders such as .AI and .IO.
Verisign is slated to officially delegate .WEB in July 2026, with plans to begin offering registrations later this year. This marks the culmination of a lengthy legal and administrative process that has kept the TLD unavailable since its initial auction.
Mike Chattan, Senior Director of Domain Operations at Network Solutions, advises businesses to prioritize educating consumers about .WEB. He stresses that consistency in branding across websites, marketing, and social media is essential for building recognition and trust around the new domain extension.
Chattan also highlighted how .WEB could offer a more accessible alternative to country code TLDs like .AI, which have gained popularity but can be complex and expensive to register and maintain. He suggests that new gTLDs like .WEB may offer better value and fit for many businesses.
