Warner Bros. Film Slate Expansion Amidst Acquisition Uncertainty
15 Apr
Summary
- Warner Bros. has increased film releases from six in 2022 to 11 last year.
- The studio plans to release 14 films this year, aiming for 18 by 2027.
- A pending sale to Paramount has raised concerns about job cuts and fewer releases.

Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, co-chairs and co-CEOs of Warner Bros. Motion Pictures Group, addressed theater owners at CinemaCon, highlighting the studio's increased commitment to film production. When they arrived in 2022, Warner Bros. released only six films. This number rose to 11 in the past year, featuring major hits. The co-CEOs emphasized that this growth is a result of focusing on original content and thanked partners for their support.
De Luca and Abdy revealed intentions to accelerate production, stating that 14 films are planned for the current year, with a target of 18 releases by 2027. This forward-looking statement comes as Warner Bros.' parent company is in the process of being sold to Paramount. The potential merger, expected to close in the third quarter, has ignited significant concern within the creative community, with over 1,000 professionals signing an open letter fearing widespread job cuts and a reduction in film and television productions.
Concerns about industry consolidation were also voiced at CinemaCon. Despite these anxieties, Paramount CEO David Ellison has assured critics that the industry is evolving and has promised to maintain a strong output of approximately 30 movies annually. The deal still requires approval from Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders and international regulatory bodies, with Paramount's CEO not appearing at CinemaCon as the process continues.
