Walmart Stock Plunges on Disappointing Sales
30 Aug
Summary
- Walmart's Q2 2027 comparable sales grew only 2.6%.
- Company anticipates $2 billion in additional fuel costs.
- Walmart stock has fallen 23.7% from its 52-week high.

Walmart Inc. (WMT), a global retailer with a market capitalization of $820.4 billion, recently experienced a significant stock price decline. This drop occurred after the company announced its Q2 2027 financial results on August 20, 2026. Comparable sales saw a disappointing growth of only 2.6%, falling short of analyst expectations.
The report also indicated a slowdown in store traffic and a minimal increase in average spending per customer. These factors contributed to a 9.2% drop in WMT stock following the announcement. Investors are also concerned about rising consumer costs.
Looking ahead, Walmart projects an additional $2 billion in fuel costs. The company is also undertaking aggressive price rollbacks on approximately 11,000 products. These measures are partly funded by a one-time $2.9 billion tariff refund.
Despite raising fiscal 2027 net-sales growth guidance to 4%-5%, Walmart guided Q3 adjusted EPS to $0.62-$0.64, which was below consensus estimates. In comparison, Walmart's stock has underperformed rival Costco Wholesale Corporation (COST) year-to-date.
