Walmart Shrimp Lawsuit: You're Paying For Ice!
28 Oct
Summary
- Lawsuit claims Great Value shrimp bags are underweight due to excess ice glaze.
- FDA rules ice glaze weight cannot be included in net product weight.
- Previous recall in August 2025 due to Cesium-137 contamination.
A class action lawsuit was filed on October 8 in Cook County, Illinois, by consumer Elijah Baptist, accusing Walmart of deceiving customers. The lawsuit alleges that Great Value frozen shrimp products are coated with an ice glaze that makes the bags underweight, potentially violating consumer protection laws.
The suit claims that the amount of ice glaze exceeds FDA guidelines, which state that the weight of the glaze cannot be included in the net product weight. Manufacturers can face criminal liability for including ice weight in the net product amount.
This is not the first time Great Value shrimp has faced scrutiny. In August 2025, some Walmart shrimp were recalled due to possible contamination with Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope. The current lawsuit seeks to represent all Illinois consumers who purchased these Great Value shrimp products.
